Luis Suarez insists Barcelona can’t over rely on Lionel Messi

Barcelona attacker Luis Suarez has stressed that the team need to find solutions when Lionel Messi does not make the starting lineup. The Catalan giants appeared on course for a second straight league defeat last weekend before Lionel Messi saved their blushes with a match-defining assist for Munir El Haddadi as they drew 1-1 against Athletic Bilbao.

Speaking after the game, Suarez indicated that the team cannot depend on Messi for all situations and the players within the squad should take more responsibility with some players having made the Blaugrana squad after experiencing success at other clubs across the world, he said: “We cannot depend on Messi solving everything. Many of us are here because of what we did in other teams. Both Lionel and [Sergio] Busquets gave us a lot, but we do not only depend on them.”

Barcelona had looked comfortable for the first four league games of the season but since then, they have struggled with the defensive organisation which has cost them dearly. In the past three matches, they have managed to accumulate just two points against teams who would most certainly fight for a mid-table position but luckily enough, they have managed to hold onto the top position with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid failing to make most of their chances.

Up next, Barcelona have an away game in the Champions League at Tottenham Hotspur and the game promises a difficult test for the Catalans whose backline has come under scrutiny. Gerard Pique, in particular, has suffered a massive dip in form during the start of the campaign and it will be interesting to see how he fares alongside Clement Lenglet or Thomas Vermaelen in central defence given Samuel Umtiti will certainly miss the game with suspension. Barcelona have good memories of the Wembley in the past, having won the 2010/11 Champions League title at the stadium.
